The 2024 Kawasaki KX450 in stock form isn’t a rocketship. In fact, it’s downright slow in the world of 450 mx machines. The airbox design is tight and the filter system leaves room for installation error as well as possibly letting some dirt into the intake. The filter on the stock cage also can concave when the throttle is opened up as the velocity of air sucks the filter through the open end of the cage. All of this can affect reliability as well as some horsepower. Enter Twin Air with their Power Flow Kit System. In cooperation with several off road race teams as well as some test riders, Twin Air has developed high-performance intake kits for most of today’s popular off road bikes. The improved kits create more open space within the airbox to optimize airflow into the engine which translates directly to more power.
Every Twin Air filter is constructed from two layers of open-pore foam which are bonded together to provide maximum filtration and superior airflow. A coarse-foam outer shell is flame laminated with a fine-foam inner core, resulting in a one-piece design that is both functional and durable. Twin Air filters are also designed to increase air volume around the filter to improve airflow into the intake. More air means more power for your engine right? Twin Air Flow bench tests have proven that their filters provide increased airflow while reducing the filters tendency to clog.
Installation is kind of a pain in the ass, I am not going to lie. Removing the plastics, fuel tank, battery, ECU, ground cable, start relay and subframe makes it a novice mechanic nightmare. That being said, it took about an hour to complete the job. The Power Flow kits replace the air-restricting stock backfire screen with a special backfire-resistant layer of foam laminated to the inside of the filter, dual stage filter with filter cage, coarse, outer open-pore foam catches airborne dirt, grime and much better than the stock cage/filter. Riding with the Twin Air Powerflow Kit didn’t produce massive horsepower results out on the track but I did notice some added low/mid end rpm response from the kit. I also like that the filter installation was much more fool proof as there are tabs on each end of the filter/filter cage to ensure proper seal. To me for $214.00, this is insurance from damaging your KX’s engine more than getting added power out of it. Usually I feel more power gain with other bikes after installing the Twin Air system but in the Kawasaki’s case, I am left with more peace of mind knowing that my filter is sealing and I am not sucking dirt through my filter/air box. You will have to use Twin Air’s proprietary Power Flow filter (P/N 151129FRX) once you purchase the kit, but the kit does come with a pre-oiled filter.
